Kylian Mbappe suffers thigh injury in yesterday’s 3-2 win

Real Madrid forward, Kylian Mbappe, faces a spell on the sidelines due to a thigh injury suffered during yesterday’s 3-2 win against Deportivo Alaves. Following tests, Madrid said the 25-year old “has been diagnosed with an injury to the biceps femoris in his left leg” and “his progress will be monitored”. Real Madrid are away in a league match at Atletico Madrid on Sunday and then play Lille in the Champions League and Villarreal in the Spanish top flight prior to the October international break. Meanwhile, Manchester City have confirmed Spain midfielder Rodri suffered a knee ligament injury against Arsenal on Sunday. No timeline has yet been put on the player’s recovery, but Pep Guardiola said he is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Nigerian Solicits Support From Finland

Nigeria has solicited the support of Finland in its pursuit of a permanent seat at the United Nations (UN) Security Council. Vice President, Kashim Shettima, who appealed for Finland’s support said Nigeria remains a super force in Africa and would do all within its reach to close cultural links and ties in the effort to reunite the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and further leave no stone unturned in the quest to stabilise Africa. Nigeria has already indicated interest in the UN’s Security Council seat following calls for reforms and expansion of the Council by some UN member countries. On his part, Finland President Alexander Stubb, expressed total support for the expansion and reconstruction of the UN Security Council, saying the dictates and dynamics of the modern world demand such change. In a related development at the meeting between Vice President Shettima and the African Union Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, VP Shettima stressed the need for consolidation of democracy as well as peaceful collaborations.

Enyimba Qualifiers for CAF Group

Enyimba Football Club of Aba qualified for the group stage of this season’s CAF Confederation Cup after a 3-2 penalty shootout win over Etoile de Filante of Burkina Faso in Uyo on Sunday, but the reigning Nigeria Premier Football League champions, Enugu Rangers, failed to make the group stage of the CAF Champions League, after losing 3-2 on aggregate to Angolan club Sagrada Esperanca of Angola. They had won the first leg 1-0 in Uyo before falling to a 3-1 defeat in Angola yesterday. Nigerian clubsides have competed in the Champions League four times and have never made it to the mini-league phase, where prize money of $800,000 is awarded to this season’s qualifiers. INEC Announces Sen Okpebholo as New Edo Governor

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Sen. Monday Okpebholo, candidate of the All Progessives Congress (APC) winner of the Saturday governorship election in Edo. INEC’s Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Faruk Kuta, announced the winner on Sunday in Benin after the collation of results from 18 local government areas in the state. Kuta, who is the Vice-Chancelleor, Federal University of Technology, Minna, said Okpebholo, a serving senator representing Edo Central at the National Assembly, polled 291,667 votes to defeat Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 247,274 votes, while the candidate of Labour Party (LP), Mr Olumide Akpata, came third with 22,763 votes. A breakdown of the results show that APC won in eleven local governments, while PDP won in seven areas.
Presidency orders crackdown on cybercriminals, stolen vehicle trafficking

President Bola Tinubu has ordered security and law enforcement agencies to take action against individuals involved in trafficking stolen vehicles, noting that one of the most effective tools available to law enforcement agencies was depriving criminals of the proceeds of their illicit activities. The President, in a statement yesterday by his Special Adviser, Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, acknowledged the recent handover of 53 vehicles and 180,300 dollars by EFCC to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), on behalf of two Canadian citizens who were victims of cybercrimes perpetrated by Nigerian nationals, assuring that Nigeria would continue to work with its international partners to ensure that cyber criminals and organised crime groups involved in transnational car thefts were deprived of the benefits of their illegal activities. The agencies tasked with this responsibility include: the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

Super Eagles retain 39th on FIFA rankings

Nigeria’s Super Eagles retained their 39th position in the latest FIFA men’s world ranking released today. The three-time African champions are ranked sixth in Africa. During the period under review, the Super Eagles defeated the Cheetahs of Benin Republic 3-0, while they were held to a 0-0 draw by the Amavubi of Rwanda in qualifying games for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Cote d’Ivoire and Tunisia are the top five teams on the continent.
The MPOX outbreak in Africa is still not under control.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) that issued the warning yesterday, added that cases were still increasing in several countries, who are struggling to respond to another major outbreak coming at the heels of the COVID-19 pandemic that exposed weak health systems. The World Health Organization declared the recent outbreak of the disease a public health emergency of international concern after the new variant was identified. The number of mpox cases in Africa has surged 177%, and deaths have increased 38.5% compared with the same period a year ago, data from the Africa CDC showed.
