The Federal Government has announced the removal of restrictions on the posting of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to private sector organizations, including banks and oil and gas companies. This change, detailed in a memo from Minister for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, dated November 18, 2024, will take effect with the upcoming 2024 Batch āCā Orientation exercise.
Previously, under a policy established by former Minister Bolaji Abdullahi, corps members were limited to four sectors: education, agriculture, health, and infrastructure. This policy was aimed at preventing the exploitation of cheap labor by private companies while fostering capacity building in the public sector.
Minister Olawande emphasized that this new directive aligns with President Bola Tinubuās efforts to tackle rising youth unemployment. It will initially be implemented in Lagos and Abuja, allowing corps members to gain valuable experience in their fields of study, which the prior policy had hindered.
The memo states, āThere is an urgent need to review this policy to expand opportunities and access for corps members to serve in places relevant to their areas of study.ā It further directs the lifting of all restrictions on postings, encouraging placements that align with corps members’ academic backgrounds in selected banks and private sector organizations.
Olawande noted that the previous policy significantly limited their ability to acquire the practical experience necessary for the job market, and this new approach aims to better prepare Nigerian youths for their future careers.
