France will ban smoking in outdoor public areas like beaches, parks, areas outside schools, bus stops, and sports venues frequented by children starting July 1st.
Its Health Minister Catherine Vautrin says the move is aimed at protecting children’s right to breathe clean air.
Smoking on café and bar terraces will still be allowed, but violators elsewhere could face a 135 Euros fine.
With over 75,000 tobacco-related deaths each year, the government says stronger action is needed. Nearly 80% of the public supports smoking bans in outdoor spaces.
