Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says the commission has no constitutional power to conduct local council elections except in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Reacting to the agitation seeking constitutional backing for INEC to conduct local council elections, Yakubu on the sidelines of a two-day induction retreat for INEC Resident Electoral Commissioners, says unless necessary constitutional amendments are made, the commission will only continue to organise national and state elections.

INEC made 142 recommendations on the improvement of the electoral process in Nigeria, while its Chairman urged the new Resident Electoral Commissioners to acquaint themselves with the challenges that comes with their new offices for effective delivery.
