Kenya scraps bread levy after protests

June 19, 2024

Kenyaā€™s government has scrapped the 16% levy on bread, and higher taxes on cooking oil and mobile money services after protests in the capital, Nairobi.

The U-turn was announced by the Chairman of the Parliamentary Finance Committee, at a press briefing attended by President William Ruto.

Since coming to office in 2022, President Ruto has introduced several new and unpopular taxes with the aim of eliminating the countryā€™s national debt of nearly $80bn.

But critics of the latest proposals fear they will stifle economic growth and lead to job losses.
