Pilgrims were performing the last major ritual of the hajj — the “stoning of the devil” — on Friday, as Muslims around the globe celebrated the beginning of the Eid al-Adha holiday.

Before daybreak, more than 1.6 million pilgrims gathered in the Mina valley near Mecca, where they threw seven stones at each of three concrete walls representing the devil.

Many pilgrims had set out early from the vast tent city of Mina, making use of the cooler morning temperatures. This symbolic act re-enacts the Prophet Abraham’s defiance of Satan at three locations where, according to tradition, the devil attempted to dissuade him from carrying out God’s command to sacrifice his son.

This ritual is a deeply significant moment in the hajj, reflecting themes of faith, obedience, and resistance against evil. As pilgrims completed this act, Muslims across the world also came together in celebration, embracing the spirit of devotion and sacrifice that defines Eid al-Adha.
