NEC resolves to embark on National Electrification Strategy, Involving States In Power Generation

In a bid to boost electricity generation in Nigeria, the National Economic Council (NEC) has resolved to establish a committee dedicated to deepening state engagement in the Electricity Reform Act of 2023 and advancing the National Electrification Strategy and Implementation Plan.

Briefing newsmen at the end of the NEC meeting presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Abuja today, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa disclosed that the Council set up a committee headed by Governor Bassey Otu of Cross Rivers State to explore mechanisms for deepening state participation in power generation. 

He stated that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to a reformed, decentralized electricity system aimed at fostering regional energy independence and improving Nigeria’s overall energy infrastructure.

Our Correspondent, Raliat Adenekan reports that Bayelsa Governor, Douye Diri on his part disclosed that the Council once again gave a one-week deadline to Adamawa, Kwara, Kebbi states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, yet to submit a report on the establishment of State police in the country.

The Council warned the states yet to submit their reports that any decision taken on the issue would be binding on states that fail to submit their report before one week the deadline, adding that the position of states on state police will be ready by the next NEC meeting.

According to the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu, a presentation by the Minister of Finance requested NEC to ratify the nomination of persons to serve as chairman and members of the governing council of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA). He also reeled out the balances in the Federation Account.
