The Nigerian Senate has sacked Danladi Umar as the Chairman of Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).
The lawmakers after a closed-door session reconvened and invoked section 157 (1) of the 1999 Constitution as amended to officially remove Umar as the CCT boss citing allegations of gross misconduct.
Eighty-four Senators had signed in favour of his removal following deliberations on a motion by the Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, thus paving the way for the official resumption of Abdullahi Bello as the new substantive Chairman of the Tribunal.
Our correspondent, Raliat Adenekan reports that President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio stated that the Senate resolved that invoking constitutional provisions for Danladi’s removal was necessary to protect the integrity of the Tribunal and ensure it remains a symbol of corporate governance in Nigeria.
Recall, Umar was chairman of the tribunal when President Tinubu was charged with operating foreign bank accounts, contrary to the constitution. He was however cleared of the charges.
