Federal Government Reverses 18-Years Admission Benchmark Into Tertiary Institutions
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has reversed the decision of his predecessor, Tahir Mamman, on the 18-years admission benchmark into tertiary institutions. Announcing this during his inaugural press briefing yesterday in Abuja, Alausa said what led to the initial decision was the way the National Policy on Education was designed. The education minister also promised to meet with JAMB and others stakeholders on the implementation of the 16-years admission benchmark into tertiary institutions. On the withdrawal of certificates obtained from Benin Republic and Togo, alausa says the policy would remain to help eliminate fake certificates from the system. FG to Revisit 2009 University Based Union Negotiations
The Federal Government has reestablished a 7member renegotiation committee to address the 2009 agreements with university-based unions. Inaugurating the committee yesterday in Abuja, Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, gave the members three months to conclude negotiations. The committee, chaired by Dr. Yayale Ahmed, comprises representatives from ASUU, SSANU, Non-Academic Staff of Educational and Associated Institutions, and the National Association of Academic Technologists.
FG, ASUU Meet September 6 To Avert Strike
The Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have reached a compromise to avert the strike threatened by the union. At the end of a meeting yesterday by both parties, a sub-committee was set up to review ASUU’s demands and ensure that all grey areas are ironed out and resolved while the government promised to ensure lasting solutions to the crisis. Briefing newsmen at the end of the closed door meeting, Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman said both parties agreed to reconvene on Sept. 6, while on his part, the ASUU National President, prof. Emmanuel Osodeke expressed hope that all issues would be resolved before the Sept. 6 meeting.
