INEC Fixes November 2025 For Anambra Governorship Elections

INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, says the off-cycle governorship election in Anambra state is scheduled for November 8, 2025. Speaking during a consultative meeting with political parties at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, Prof Yakubu said the polls will hold in 5,720 polling units across the state and that a formal notice for the election will be published on Nov 13th The INEC Chairman equally said party primaries will hold from March 20 to April 10, 2025, and that candidate nomination process will begin on 18th April and close on May 12, while political campaigns will commence on June 11 and end at midnight on November 6, 2025. Our correspondent, Raliat Adenekan reports that Professor Yakubu also revealed that preparations are in top gear for the November 16, 2024 governorship election in Ondo State, as he urged Voters to pick up their Permanent Voter’s Cards from yesterday, October 17 to October 29.
NCDC Warns Of Rising Cholera, Fever, Marburg Threats

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has raised concern over the rising incidences of infectious diseases across the country. Its Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, during a news conference yesterday in Abuja, mattributed the recent floods in northern states, including Borno, Adamawa, Jigawa, Yobe, and Kano, as the primary factor worsening the spread of cholera in these regions, now identified as the epicenters of the outbreak. Nigeria will also become one of the first countries to roll out a new R21 malaria vaccine after receiving a first batch of 846,200 doses produced by the Serum Institute of India and Novavax. The Health Minister, Muhammad Ali Pate, says the doses represent a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to eliminate malaria.

FG to Revisit 2009 University Based Union Negotiations

The Federal Government has reestablished a 7member renegotiation committee to address the 2009 agreements with university-based unions. Inaugurating the committee yesterday in Abuja, Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, gave the members three months to conclude negotiations. The committee, chaired by Dr. Yayale Ahmed, comprises representatives from ASUU, SSANU, Non-Academic Staff of Educational and Associated Institutions, and the National Association of Academic Technologists.
FG Unveils Reforms for Economic Growth

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has unveiled an ambitious agenda for economic reform to reduce inflation, create jobs, and foster growth in key sectors. Speaking at the 30th Nigeria Economic Summit (NES30), in Abuja yesterday, the minister said that government was focused on agriculture, manufacturing, oil, and housing as vital drivers of Nigeria’s economy. He said that the intention was to tackle poverty by enhancing agricultural productivity and food security, which is essential to lowering the high inflation rate. Edun added that the government was partnering with the African Development Bank (AfDB) to establish agricultural processing zones, which would provide a robust supply of raw materials for domestic industries.
National Grid Successfully Restored after Collapse

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has announced that the national grid has successfully restored about 90 per cent of bulk power supply across its substations nationwide, following a system collapse that plunged the country into a blackout. Its spokesperson Ndidi Mbah in a statement late yesterday, explained that bulk power supply has been restored to the Abuja axis and other major distribution load centres throughout the country. She noted that while recovery efforts began immediately, there was a setback at approximately 10:24 AM on Tuesday, but the TCN has made significant progress in the recovery process, ensuring that about 90 per cent of its substations nationwide now have bulk power availability. Mbah clarified that the partial disturbance did not impact the Ibom Gas generating station, which had been isolated from the grid.
EFCC Declares Oil Mogul Bolaji Akinduro Wanted Over Alleged Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has declared an oil mogul, Bolaji Akinduro, wanted over alleged fraud. The commission’s Spokesman, Dele Oyewale, in a statement at the weekend, said the 51 year old Akinduro, an indigene of Ondo State, whose last known address was 272, Patience Coker Street, Ajose Adeogun, Victoria Island, Lagos State, allegedly obtained money under false pretence and committed stealing by conversion.
