Tanzania Confirms Marburg Virus Outbreak with One Case

Tanzania’s President, Samia Hassan, has confirmed an outbreak of the deadly Marburg virus in the northwest of the country, with one confirmed case so far.

Hassan, who announced this at a press conference yesterday that was also attended by World Health Organisation’s Director General Tedros Ghebreyesus in Dodoma, said at least 25 suspected cases had all tested negative.

Hassan said the government is strengthening its response efforts to tackle the virus spread, and a rapid response team has been dispatched to the area to follow up on all suspected cases and try to contain the outbreak.

This comes barely a week after Tanzania’s health minister denied there was an outbreak in the African country
