Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, has passed away at the age of 61 following an illness. Nicknamed Dodo Mayana, Rufai was a celebrated member of the Nigerian squad that clinched the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.
He also played in the 1994 FIFA World Cup, which marked Nigeria’s debut in the global tournament.
Rufai earned 65 caps for Nigeria and is widely considered one of the greatest goalkeepers the nation has ever produced. Rufai made history when he scored for the Super Eagles in a 6â0 win against Ethiopia in 1993.
Meanwhile, tributes have poured in over the ex-Super Eagles shot stopperâs death.
A former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, was among the first to pay tribute to Rufai, describing his demise as a âprofound lossâ.
Super Eagleâs star, Ahmed Musa, also bid farewell to whom he said was âa true giant of Nigerian footballâ.
His death came on the same day Liverpoolâs Diogo Jota died in an accident.
