Nigeria not yet ready for state police

April 23, 2024

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun believes Nigeria is not “mature” for state policing despite the myriad of security challenges facing it.

Speaking yesterday during a national dialogue on state police held in Abuja, the Police IG, represented by Assistant Inspector-General, Ben Okolo, said it is the submission of the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force that Nigeria is not yet ready for the establishment of state-controlled police, as “there is the potential for abuse of power by the state political leadership for political or personal gain, and undermine human rights and security..

Making other suggestions to better secure the country, the Police IG proffered the need to ramp up the yearly recruitment of Police officers, more training for its personnel, and for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road Safety to form a department under the Nigerian police.
